Units of Indian superconglomerate Tata Group were hit with an injunction Wednesday when a Wisconsin federal judge ruled that, in light of a $940 million trade secrets verdict against the companies, they should be barred from using stolen information about Epic Systems Corp.’s health care software.
U.S. District Judge William M. Conley issued a permanent injunction, to be watched by a court-appointed monitor, against Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. and Tata America International Corp., keeping the companies from using the data they stole from Epic to make software that helps health care companies organize billing and other matters, according to Wednesday’s order.
“In light of plaintiff’s success on the merits and the inadequacy of damages to remedy any future benefit defendants may obtain from their unlawful acts, the balance of equities lean heavily in favor of entry of an injunction,” Judge Conley wrote. “Moreover, the public’s interest in protecting trade secrets and other confidential information further supports entry of a permanent injunction.”
