Meghan O’Connor Provides Insight for MedPage Today Article on HHS Artificial Intelligence Rule
Meghan O’Connor, chair of the Quarles & Brady Data Privacy & Security team and Milwaukee office chair of the Health & Life Sciences Practice Group, was quoted in a MedPage Today article about a new U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) rule regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) connected to health data.
The “Health Data, Technology, and Interoperability: Certification Program Updates, Algorithm Transparency and Information Sharing (HTI-1)” rule addresses areas related to patient access, interoperability and standards.
In the article, O’Connor noted the importance of the timeliness of the ruling. An excerpt:
The final rule from HHS opens in a new tab or window on transparency in artificial intelligence (AI) has some positive points, but it won't solve all the challenges posed by this new technology, according to a legal expert.
"I'm glad to see that there is rulemaking that is timely," Meghan O'Connor, JD, a partner in the Quarles & Brady law firm in Milwaukee, said in a phone interview. "So often the rulemaking process doesn't allow for it to be timely or up to date with current security and technology practices. So I like to see that."
