Justin DeAngelis Attends 2021 ID5 Annual Meeting on Behalf of AIPLA
Chicago — The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP today announced that Justin DeAngelis, an associate in the firm's Intellectual Property Practice Group, attended the ID5 2021 annual meeting on behalf of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA)
DeAngelis is the current chair of the Prosecution & Practice Subcommittee of AIPLA's Industrial Design Committee, and served as chair of the International Policy & Practice Subcommittee of the Industrial Design Committee from 2018 to 2020.
The ID5 is an international framework for cooperative efforts on industrial design legal issues, which includes the world’s five largest industrial design protection offices China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the Japan Patent Office (JPO), the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). The ID5 annual meeting includes sessions for users or stakeholders within the jurisdictions governed by the ID5 to discuss opportunities for harmonization and to provide insight into user experiences when applying for and obtaining industrial design protection from the various offices.
During the meeting, the ID5 and its stakeholder representatives presented various ways that industrial design protection can be strengthened as the world emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic. The user session included discussions related to filing grace periods and the timing of publications, the advancement of technology and how to protect new designs emerging therefrom, and the enforcement of industrial design rights in light of the significant increase in online sales of goods. The next ID5 annual meeting will be held in November 2022, hosted by the EUIPO.
