Following is an excerpt:
Data security and collection is one of the most important issues facing consumers and companies today. To have a good reputation you must have the security of your customer’s data well in hand. Heather Buchta of Quarles and Brady helps her clients manage security in technology to stay at the top of their fields.
What does your current job entail?
“I spend my days reviewing consumer websites for disclosures on data collection and use, and reading contracts.”
What do you like best about your role?
“I enjoy the variety of issues. Although all of my work is software licensing or data privacy questions, every day brings a new issue, a new problem and the opportunity for a new solution.”
Do you feel your education helped prepare you for this?
“My formal education, while critical to getting me to where I am, has very little relation to my day to day work. It helped me develop a foundation of writing and communication skills, which is absolutely necessary for engaging with clients and opposing counsel. However, most of the technical expertise that actually allows me to provide effective and efficient counsel to my clients was gained in the trenches. I started in the data privacy field about the time that data privacy emerged as a field. Most, if not all, of the data privacy and data security issues that companies face didn’t exist 15 years ago. As a result, I have learned as the industry has developed.”
