Overview:
Universities often play a significant role in fostering startups, providing support both in terms of resources and guidance. The interactions between universities and startups can be mutually rewarding, but can also present a series of unique considerations and risks. Universities have to consider a wide range of issues, including creating and enforcing policies that: appropriately define the relationship between the university, the startup, and their (often overlapping) employees; manage expectations of faculty, students, and entrepreneurs; delineate appropriate use of university resources; and properly characterize ownership of intellectual property. This session touched on the challenges faced by universities, highlighted some of the common issues that can arise, and outlined best practices to minimize the surprises that a university may face when collaborating with startups.
